For a thrilling time out on the water, tearing across the surface and making waves, you can’t beat a personal watercraft or PWC. These compact but powerful machines, built by many manufacturers including Yamaha and Sea-Doo, offer speed and maneuverability coupled with freedom you just can’t get on a boat. Seating

A typical PWC features seating for two people. Larger watercraft can hold more people but are more difficult to maneuver through the water. You can achieve more speed and sharper turns with a smaller model, but you become limited to one rider at a time. We recommend a two-seater for your first PWC. The larger watercraft are meant for more leisurely riding and the smaller are built for speed and agility. A two-seat PWC is a good middle ground for all-around riders.

Body Style

Depending on what you're planning for your PWC, you'll want to consider a few different body styles. If speed and nimbleness is the name of the game, a shorter craft with a narrow frame makes for incredible cornering and takeoff. However, if you're new to PWC, a larger craft is easier to learn on and still provides enough speed to get anyone's adrenaline pumping but is a little easier to control. Additionally, consider if you want to stand up on your PWC like you're skiing through the water. We have a great selection for every rider.

Steering A PWC

All personal watercraft handle differently from one another, so it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the one you’re riding on a given day if it’s new to you. PWCs don’t steer the same as boats, either -- they operate more like aquatic motorcycles. You steer using the handlebars and apply the throttle with a twist of the handle. When it comes to turning on a PWC, you’ll need to lean your body weight into the turn to make it sharper and faster, opening up the throttle as you straighten out again. Personal watercraft require some space to slow down and come to a complete stop, so make sure you begin this process far in advance of where you want to actually stop. This is of particular importance as you’re coming back to shore.

Safety On The Water

Riding a personal watercraft necessitates that you take some safety precautions. You should always know how to swim before you climb aboard one, and you should be wearing a life jacket fitted to you. Attach the engine shut-off lanyard to either your wrist or your life jacket so that the PWC comes to a stop if you fall off or become unable to operate it. Give others on the water a wide berth, particularly swimmers, and don’t coast too close to boats so you don’t splash water on everyone. Pass to the right of other crafts. Never drink alcohol before operating a PWC because you want your reflexes and focus to remain sharp. Check with your doctor if you’re on prescription medications or have a health condition that might interfere with your ability to operate heavy machinery. Riding with others will also help keep you safe.
