Making a Golf Cart “Street-Legal”

First, you might be curious to know what it is that turns your average golf cart into a street-legal LSV. A street-legal LSV has several primary requirements that make it safe to use on public thoroughfares.

The LSV must be able to obtain a speed of at least 20 miles per hour, ideally more. The LSV should be equipped with mirrors, seatbelts, headlights, turn signals and brake lights that are all functional and compliant with vehicle regulations. Finally, the LSV must be given its own VIN (vehicle identification number).

In some states, there are even more regulations established by the state DMV around what qualifies someone to drive a street-legal golf cart and what laws that driver needs to follow. Florida law defines an LSV as a vehicle that goes over 20 miles per hour, but no more than 25 miles per hour. It can be difficult to find a golf cart that falls into this range, since they often are manufactured to go at slower speeds. Different counties have their own rules, so make sure you look these up.
 

What is a Golf Cart LSV?

A Golf Cart LSV (Low Speed Vehicle) is a type of street-legal golf cart specifically designed to operate at speeds of up to 25 mph. These vehicles are built with safety in mind, featuring all of the same safety features required for a standard street-legal golf cart such as side-view mirrors, headlights and taillights, turn signals, hazard lights, brakes that are in good working condition, and a horn that can be heard from at least 200 feet away. Golf Cart LSVs are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to handle more weight and travel longer distances than a standard golf cart.

How You Can Use Your Golf Cart

In Florida, an average golf cart can be driven between sunrise and sunset on any roads that post the usage of golf carts on them. This is why you’ll see golf carts used as a means of transport in a variety of different settings. Some of these places include retirement communities, college campuses, mobile home parks and residential neighborhoods. If your cart is equipped as an LSV, then it may travel on any road with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.
